After being the victim of questionable judging decisions in his past two world title fights, St Helens born fighter Martin Murray will get another shot at glory as it was confirmed that he is to fight world champion Gennady Golovkin, regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world at present.
There was talk that Golovkin was looking up and down the weight classes before the fight with Murray was confirmed, but now the unbeaten Kazakh will be preparing for his middleweight clash with the Englishman on February 21st in Monte Carlo.
Murray overcame Italian Domenico Spada on Saturday night, but the prospect of fighting WBA middleweight champion Golovkin will surely mean that Murray will have to go up a gear to come away from the bout victorious.
Golovkin has been dubbed as the “middleweight” Mike Tyson due to his immensely strong punching capabilities and Murray has already spoke of his admiration of his opponent.”He’s crushed everybody he’s been in with, but I’ve got the tools to beat any middleweight out there. I wouldn’t be taking the fight if I didn’t think I could win,” said Murray on his expectations for the fight.
Golovkin claimed that the fight was beneficial for him as it was to take place in Europe where the majority of his following is, and furthermore he stated that Murray would pose a challenge for him. Pundits and fans alike however believe that Golovkin may be best suited to take on a fighter in the calibre of the American, Andre Ward.
Despite it being the fight the fans want to see, Ward hasn’t fought in the past 11 months and would no longer be the best option from a financial perspective, but in terms of fighting class, it is unquestionable that Ward would be a worthy contender.
Regardless of who he chooses to fight, Golovkin is the man to fight at the moment and had a number of high calibre possibilities before the fight with Murray was arranged, such as Carl Froch,Miguel Cotto and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, but other arrangements saw Golovkin choosing Murray who now will be handed the opportunity of a lifetime with superstardom a possibility if he is to come out victorious.
